I agree that if the fabric is good enough for the backing, it would be good enough for the binding. I often use wide back fabric for binding and have never had a problem.

I have used the offcuts from widebacks for binding four or five times....no issues at all.

I have used it several times, as the coordination of backing and binding appeals to me. I have also cut the extras into straight of the grain strips and used it as any other fabric. The notion of tossing the trimmings squaring up the quilt makes me cringe. Now, if I were backing with muslin, it might be different.

If the wide back fabric is not appropriate for binding, then I am in trouble! I use it as binding all the time. I make double fold binding cut on the bias. Seems to work just fine.

Part of the reason I so like wide back, beyond not having to piece the back, is that there is usually enough extra to make binding that matches the back. That is my choice and my quilts never reach the full 108".

Guess my feeling is the if the fabric is not strong enough for binding then I wouldn't use it as backing. There are poor quality of all widths of fabric.

Heck yes, I use backing fabric for whatever I need it for. Sometimes when I can get backing fabric on a sale I've buy lots of it. I've used if for binding, piecing, borders as well as backing. You can't beat the price of 3 yds across for just a little more than what it would cost you to buy 1yd x 42". Seems like a deal to me.

Of course it would be ok to use the backing fabric for binding. If this fabric is of good quality and good enough for the backing and from a quilt shop then it would be ok for binding. I used a backing fabric for binding more than once and have not had any trouble. You have extra why not use it

I've never done it but I don't see why not?? I am usually using a different color or print for my binding to get a greater contrast to the quilt. I would not see that as an issue. IF I am using a fabric in a quilt front or back I want to know that both are going to wear pretty evenly. Historically my bindings begin to wear out faster over the years. This does not concern me because that would be a historical issue if I were using the backing for bindings.
