If your taller friend had no problem with the machine, perhaps you should consider putting some (one) cushion on your sewing chair to make you "taller". I have found that 2 pillows in my chair (with arms) put me at the right height for my sewing table and I can sew all day without getting aching shoulders. I think of my chair as "My sewing throne".
