I have a Olfa and use a mat, not Olfa, that I purchased years and years ago, no problems at all.

I have an Olfa cutter, Harbor Freight blades, and a non-Olfa mat. They haven't complained once! :D

Your blades actually last longer if you use them with the same brand of mat. They're designed to work together. Some brands of mats do dull blades faster.

The only difference in the blades are the center cut out. The blades are all made from the same metal. Some are coated with teflon like the Gingher blades. A titanium blade will last for years but will cost a house payment. LOL. Mats are either hard surface or self healing. I prefer the hard surface but use both types. Don't fret over stuff like this, you'll go nuts. Just use what you like and forget it.
