Ombre fabrics - how do you use them?

I used one that was shaded a bit differently as the background for a celtic knotwork wallhanging. I cut it so that the primary color remained relatively consistent throughout, but shaded toward the other colors near the edges. I really liked the effect it created.

I saw a wonderful use of ombre' in a quilt in a shop......flying geese in strips running vertcially up and down the top, ombre' in geese running one way and the opposite ombre' in the background running the other way. Very colorful and attention getting. Should have taken a picture of it!

I once saw a "Sewing with Nancy" show, in which she used ombre fabrics in quilt making. I found the DVD online:
