One of my reasons for pre-washing.

It seems those batiks are the worst! It must be the primitive finishing process it goes thru...trick is don't buy for awhile, let mfgrs know how badly their product is produced. There was a time fabric was labeled "colorfast".....did that mean no bleeding?

After I had purchased a hunter green fabric at a quilt show the owner of the booth told me this fabric will bleed. I sure Wish she would have told me beforehand. I treated it with retayne in very hot water in the sink. Then I washed it in cold with color catchers. It turned out ok but what a pain. I have more trouble with reds but I've never had a problem that color catchers didn't take care of.

I do a test pre-wash of everything in the sink. However, I have a friend who takes a shortcut. She pre-washes in a washer, but toward the end of the wash cycle, she dips a clear glass into the water and checks the color of the water in the glass. Then she proceeds as necessary. This works for large pieces of fabric, such as backings, which she would wash anyway to take care of shrinkage. I think it is smart of her to stop the washer and check for bleeding during the cycle.
I am very irritated by quilt shop owners and their employees who state that only low priced fabrics will bleed. They tell me that as they are ringing up my Retayne.

I have made lots of quilts over the years. I do not pre-wash. I use color catchers anytime I wash a quilt and I have never had a problem. Color catchers most often come out colored in some way. So far, so good!

My worst experience was also with a MODA fabric. This really surprised me as i had never had any problems with MODA before. It ruined a baby quilt. Stands to show you it is not necessarily related to any brand and or how much money you spend on it.
