OPENING A NEW LQS, NEED COLOR HELP

Customer service is a #1 priority. Greet the customer or at least acknowledge them in some way. Whether the customer is experienced quilter or first time in a quilt shop, teach your help to ask the customers good questions about their skills, knowledge of quilting/sewing, likes/dislikes, etc.
My friend wanted fabric for her mom to make a quilt for her new home and their king size bed. She wanted shams and pillowcases to match. We're talking over $300.00 in fabric. The clerks never greeted her, never asked her any questions, looked at her like she was a moron, and my friend never bought the fabric. I did witness all of this and I did not buy more than $40.00 mdse. because of their lack of service or interest. This was an upscale LQS in Annapolis, MD recently. Boy, was I disappointed.

I can't resist - my first suggestion about your new LQS was open it in NJ.
I agree with lighter colors, creams, tone on tone, being harder to find. My favorite color - orange (and all autumn tones and prints). My least favorite is someone else's favorite so there's no answer to that.
Once you're up and running, have fill-out forms in the store asking customers what they'd like that you don't carry. That's where your best suggestions will come from.

I think the 1930's fabric would be a great idea, they are really hard to find. I hope that you will have an online store, I am in Texas so it would be a really long drive for me to come to your store. LOL Good luck with your new store.

Buy what YOU like. It will be easier for you to be excited about the fabric, maybe make some samples using it, and promote it to your customers. Then as you grow, start buying what customers ask for and you do not have. Blenders are always good fabrics to have - all colors but especially whites, off-whites, and beiges. Baby and toddler fabrics seem to be popular here too - they can make quick and easy quilts - some panels too. My favorites are blakc,red, and white - but these are not that popular with most people.
