I have a large stash of calicos and I still use them sometimes, especially the delicate floral prints.

Would you please post photos/scans/illustrations of what you consider "calicos"?

I was taught that it was a type of fabric, rather than a type of design.

Bear, traditionally calicos or quilting calicos are those tiny all over prints. Like the Kansas Troubles lines from Moda or the newly introduced "little House on the Prairie" line from Andover.

I still like them and have some in my stash. Mostly the newer ones. But when I first started quilting pretty much all I ever got was the "Keepsake Calico" from JoAnn's. That was before I knew there was even such a thing as a LQS.

There's still a place for the tiny print calicoes in my quilting pursuits, especially if I'm doing a reproduction quilt. Right now I'm doing a log cabin that I want to to look old when it's done.

I think calicos tend to look dated but that doesn't mean that some people don't like them. At least with the smaller prints they can be cut up into small pieces. I don't like some of the new stuff that has such a large print. Just don't like cutting that stuff up so I would only use it in a pattern that called for large pieces.

    Lovely quilt, thimblebug.

I have been given lots of calicoes over the years and I am starting to appreciate them more. I love the Little House on the Prairie line but haven't bought any yet. I am also "If the color is right use it" frame of mine.

I think they must have been really popular in times past. I work with a charity group that gets lots and lots of donations. They are the most donated fabrics. Either people bought too much or did not use them.

I liken them and bought some of th e new calico line from And hover Little House On the Prairie and made dresses for my grand daughters. I was also given lots of older calico fabri c and use it if it works out that way and it looks good wi th what I am making. I would like to make some all calico scrappy quilts as they are reminiscent of the '70s and '80s to me. The '70 s is really in again any ways. Maybe calico fabrics will be the next 1930 s fabrics?

For a while, back 30 or so years ago, calicoes were about all that was available, very little choice. The donations are probably from older peoples', stash and the family is cleaning out.

I enjoy them! Find they are great for piecing small - well, pieces! Also work well with civil war repro's and sampler quilts.
