Default Opinions needed about Honor Flight Quilt sizing

I recently began piecing a small quilt in preparation for distribution at the end of August to my local guild for the Honor Flight Program. I originally started with 6 1/2 inch blocks but scaled down to 5 1/2 when I made a speed error. My question is this: To obtain the right size, (36x36) approx, I will have to make about 7 rows. (8 will be too wide), no borders.(Quilt is perpendicular on board).
Do you think a quilt with an uneven amount of block rows looks odd? Should I just make 8 rows? They can be a little flexible on the size, but can't be too large since they are meant to be lap quilts on the flights.
Of course had I not made the error, the 6 1/2 's would have worked out perfectly! PS I will be fixing the mistake in row 3-another speed error!
Thanks in advance!

Uneven is fine for me. Sometimes I prefer it.

I almost always make an odd number of rows on my quilts.

If you are just using blocks, I don't think it makes any different if you have odd x odd, even x even, or odd x even number of rows/columns.

I'd go with the 7 rows/columns. 40" can start to get unwieldy for someone in a wheelchair or with limited strength. Make sure to also pick a lightweight batting.

One of my quilt teachers said to always go for an odd number of blocks in at least the length or the width of a quilt.

I didn't know about this program so googled it. Thanks for telling us about it. This person made hers 36 x 48". I agree with the others that anything will look ok.

Thanks so much everyone for your input. Very helpful. Bree123, I also thought 40 inches a little unwieldy but you know, when you have been working on something for awhile sometimes you lose perspective.
They take the quilts on a bus and plane ride so that would certainly be the case.
