No names if I have guessed correctly. Names if I am wrong:

    John Wayne
    Larry Bird
    Babe Ruth

Edited to add the black on the tan looks awesome.

Here's my motto: "Sometimes I try to act normal, but it gets boring; so, I just go back to being myself." If you want to use print fabric for your silhouettes and dark fabric for a background, I say go for it! There's no reason not to really. Yes, the black silhouette on a tan background will be fantastic, but I think the other way would be just as fantastic. It all boils down to whatever you think would make you the happiest.

I really like the black and tan one you did. Not crazy about the first one with the printed fabric for John Wayne. Even though they are recognizable, I still think if I were doing this I would embroider the names beneath each silhouette.

I love your first idea and it reminds me of a class I took in the 70s called "Reverse Quilting". This is where you cut out the image from black fabric (leaving a 1/4" for turning under) then you put the fabric of your choice behind it. We hand stitched our blacks but today machine stitching is great. However, having said all this, I have to say that I really love the black silhouettes. They are just so sharp and perfect. If you do FMQ, you could do their names in the quilting just to show off. Love your ideas.

Thanks so much for all the input from such great helpers! Feline, you were very close, except the last one is Willie Mays. The guy the quilt is for will know who they are and that's all that matters.
I will definitely post a photo of the finished quilt.
    Hugs and smiles !

You are right, as long as he knows who they are that is all that matters......but, I would just like to suggest you look at the baseball player turned over. The way he is now, he is batting left-handed. Willy Mays was a righty. A hard-core fan would notice that.

    It is very cool!!!

Oh no Monika!! LOL, I just finished stitching down the edges.... I know, I know!!! I did it on purpose as a conversation starter? Willie was just showing off that day? Ummm.... Ummmmm....

I can't believe I did that.... I knew there is a reason I don't do applique. LOL. I suppose John was a rightie too. I imagine I have them all using their wrong hands. grrrrrrrrrrrr...
