My version of a comfort quilt is one I have made for someone because they need it as a special pick-me-up. They may have lost a loved one, had surgery or cancer and are in treatments or just because they are feeling down and need something to warm them up. I make them because I truly care about the people and I tell them that it is made with our, mine & hubby's, love for them and I hope it warms their body & their soul and that they are in our prayers. So often people don't think others care and this shows that we do.
Edited to Add: When it's for a grandbaby, I tell them that every time they snuggle up in the quilt I made for them, they can feel my arms around them and know that I love them. I really think the handmade quilts make a bigger impact than we ever know. I have found out years later, that the quilt was never allowed to leave the child's bed, no matter what the season. It's a real feel-good feeling in my heart to know it meant so much to them.

Either of the two sashing options shown will work. The quilt is very busy - which kids love - and an additional solid sashing between blocks would give the eye a place to rest. I'd probably choose a single color for the additional sashing just for that reason.
Thank you for making the comfort quilt.
