I am making a queen quilt and found the perfect fabric for the backing. BUT, I have to piece it. Since it is directional fabric, I have to buy extra to accomodate for that. Problem is, the fabric comes in 8 yds on the bolt and I need at least 10 yds. because I need 3 "strips" to get it wide enough. So in order to get enough for the 3 strips (which will give me extra on the width, I will have to order 16 yds, meaning I will get 2 - 8 yd bolts.
Oh well, that will give me a lot extra with which to make another quilt so it's not really a big deal EXCEPT to my husband... he thinks I am wasting my money. Sometimes men just don't get it.... ha ha ha
He would not hesitate to do it this way if he were ordering fabric to upholster seats for one of his old cars.

You can always find another project to use up the extra fabric.

You don't have to buy the ordered fabric by the bolt. You can order just the yardage you need. I've done it.
I wouldn't give DH much detail of, how much I need or spend....! If you need it, you need it.

You can always use the extra fabric for something else, and I would go for it!

Pillow cased ot a nice drawstring bag to keep the quilt in when not in use. There are hundreds of ways that this is not a waste of fabric but an investment in you.

Are you ordering online or a store special order? You can order the yardage you need - at least, you could a few months ago.

yeah I do have to order that much.... A full bolt has 8 yds on it. I could order just what I need, but I would get one bolt and then whatever more I need (would be cut) - I need 3 pieces of approx. 3 1/3 yds to get the pattern to match. If I ordered say - ten yds. I would get one bolt plus a 2 yd cut. I only want to seam it in one direction.
