I haven't read through this complete thread so someone may have answered this for you.

I have a Handi Quilter II frame that I have modified to 12 feet. With that came the need to replace the portable take up rollers with something longer and firmer. I replaced them with conduit found at the hardware store. I believe I have some photos of that change if you would like to see them.

And the conduit are much stronger. There is some give but only if you pull hard on them. Pulling that hard would make the top too tight anyways.

    Hope this helps.

My SIL has a Hinterburg frame & they tell you get the conduit rods at whatever length you want your frame to be.
These rods can be cut to length.

Michael, did you ever find a solution to you dipping rods? I'm having the same problem and was hoping you had some tips on how to fix it. Thanks!
