Orphan blocks ?????????
#21
I have two boxes of orphans from my guild members and my plan is to put them together randomly with sashing if needed and create donation quilts for a Syrian refuge organization in St. Louis, Oasis. (Until I find a local organization.) This will give the families a personally made gift of warmth and something that is "American". I have enough for half a dozen large quilts and likely enough for several baby sized quilts. Time to get to the sewing room!

By using partial seams, you don't have to cut the blocks any further. I do think using sashing in between makes for an interesting look. My guild just asked for orphans to make yard signs for our upcoming quilt show. Charity quilts are a better suggested use for them. Now to get to work. Although making quilt, I do not consider work.

I have mine in stacked pizza boxes. I will use them as the fronts of tote bags to hold gifts, to become gifts, or some folded in half make great wine bags. Most of my orphans come from trying out a new pattern or new color combo that I found I didn't care for. I sort by group (writing on cardboard side of box) brights, pastels, christmas, summer prints, etc. If I get a bunch in that group, I might sash and put together a throw size to donate.

I have recently finished three quilts using orphan blocks. You can see them on my blog. I made examples of medallion, improv and row settings. The last Friday of February, I will be hosting a link up for orphan block quilts if you want to see more inspiration. There are so many great ideas.

It's also easy enough to add a bit of border to two sides to make them fit a rectangular frame. Or you can add narrow borders to two sides and wider borders to the other two sides to make a rectangular fabric frame around your square.
