Panel quilting
I do hope someone can help me. My daughter wants a quilt made for her daughter, she has picked a panel that she likes, my question is I would love to quilt around the animals on the quilt, but I don't want the stitching to be seen on the back of the quilt. Can I quilt the panel and the batting, and then later sew the backing on to complete the quilt.

I have done that with panels before, but be sure to check on the maximum recommended spacing of quilting that your batting allows. If the animals are larger than that, put a little strategic/artistic quilting on the animals to comply with the recommendation. If you see what I mean.

Yes, you can do that. It's how I typically quilt my applique's so it's basically the same concept. You still need to quilt the backing once it is on to secure the quilt sandwich but that can be strategic and based on batting recommendations as mentioned above.

I would put the backing and a muslin back on just the panel then quilt it. Then put your full batting and backing on the entire quilt. Quilt around the outside of the panel and then do any FMQ you like around those seam lines to hold the back to the quilt.
