Panicked, but lucky!

Thanks, everyone for your concern and great suggestions. I have an auto shut off iron that I have used in the past, just as a safeguard, but I am doing a lot of paper piecing and I am using a small Rowenta travel iron which is great for that, but doesn't cut off. Even with the auto shut off I have found myself checking and rechecking that it is off. Now I think I will try some of your advice, probably the surge protector and lamp idea. I am feeling much better now and almost back to normal, whatever that is! You really know how to help someone feel better!

Wow you sure must have a quilting angel watching over you and a very good one. I am so happy you are doing better
and the iron did not start a fire. Lucky you. Take care of yourself and keep quilting.

I have been using a travel iron, & love it, but I have noticed, when I turn it to the off position, it does all go cold, so I know it stays on a bit. So, I have just gotten into the habit of turning it off, then unplugging it. I also check my studio, one last time, before I go to bed at night. It's the bedroom right across from ours, so no biggie, but makes me feel better doing it, just in case.... Glad no one else has had any iron problems like these!...
