Default Pattern or Design for Challah Cover

After refusing to let my husband keep my Christmas tree quilt using beautiful Lauren Burch fabrics, I promised to make a Challah cover for us. A Challah cover is about 18 X 24 and is used in a ceremonial way to celebrate the Jewish Sabbath. I would like something very colorful. Even a design would work. I found some patterns on line but they were either too blah or not appropriate for quilting. Any ideas???

Would you want to do an embroidery design on this challa cover?

I found a great place for Jewish embroidery designs when a friend was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Many of us made blocks for her. Mine had the symbol for LIFE on it. It was beautiful.

Would your challah cover be something that you wanted to be very opulent or more homey? Looking at images on a Google search, they seem to run the gamut (and thanks for helping me learn about something new to me today!) Perhaps a crazy quilt design, with fabrics and embroidery that are meaningful to your family? For a more traditional quilt pattern that would translate to a smaller size, you might look for doll quilts or miniature quilts to get some ideas. Just about any pattern can be downsized and made brighter with different fabrics.

I need to do something quilted and artsy for DH. Something like this picture but it will all be free hand.

That's pretty, looks like machine applique with a satin stitch finish around the pieces. Please share with us what you do, I'm curious to see it now.
