Perhaps you are not getting the corner pieces back on with the middles meeting exactly. You may need to draw a line diagonally before cutting.
This is an interesting pattern, but think I would prefer to just sew the squares together and do the maze as applique - much simpler.

I learned a lot about how the narrow strips are suppose to line up when making the lattice quilt. Just sewing on the strips won't work. I don't know how the pattern instructs you to make sew the strips but watch Jenny Doan's tutorial about narrow strips sewn in the block. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QNUkLoGQY8
