Here is what I have in my house - one is a star I sewed for another project.

I'm wondering if these could make a snowflake?

I just can't tell!

I took Paula's snowflake class years ago. I've made 2 snowflakes. At the moment I can only locate one of them. I'm trying to post a picture of it and keep getting an upload fail message. Must be because I'm new (I hope lol)

Thank you for posting this (I find upload failures are usually because you have to reduce the size of the photo).

Please tell us how hard this was to achieve? What were the hardest parts and things to watch for?

It was more time consuming than hard.

Hardest parts:

1. finding the fabrics that work well
2. cutting the templates accurately
3. sewing accurately

It's very important to use all the tools she recommends. You don't need a protractor. I've got a "chart" she gave us that is used to calculate and make your pie slice (I probably didn't explain that well). I'll scan it and send it via pm to you in a couple of days (my scanner is broken and will have to use my moms). Please note that not all 1/8" gridded template plastic is accurate. I bought mine from cottonclub.com. Check out their Paula Nadelstern section. They have the gridded plastic, the beveled rulers and fine markers. Be sure to use fine thread.

Overall I don't think it was hard...just take your time. I enjoyed the process and the challenge and felt like the quilting queen when I was done. Now all I have to do make a quilt out of it. My plan is to make a medallion quilt with it.

This is the same technique as her kaleidoscope quilts but that book isn't as well written as the snowflake book.

Hi Joanne -

I do have a question:

How do we get the small templates of fabric to look like snowflakes?

I mean I understand that we will use a piece of plastic as a looking glass to place onto the fabric selections thereby giving us a window to imagine the design. But what I mean is, how do we even find these pointy, spikey, furry things that look like snowflake arms?

Is there a trick to this? Or is it just a question of being very persistent with fabric shopping?

My book came today. I looked thru it quickly. My husband broke his ankle last weekend and is now recovering from the surgery to fix it. I will start looking for some fabrics, too, but it may be a month or so before I can dive in.

My book came yesterday. I looked thru my stash and found a couple chunks that might work. I've also looked online and found some possibilities. I'll look around town today. Making a quilt with this method will also qualify for my Guild's President's Challenge that was just announced this month. I hope I can find the right kinds of fabric.

I think a lot of what you are seeing is small portions of a print. When they are sewn together and mirrored is when you get the furry arms. If you look closely at jojorip's snowflake, it seems to me that each triangle is made from 22 sections. Each half of the triangle is mirrored. That's a lot of small pieces of fabric to sew together.
