I used pencil on my first quilt, a table runner, and the marking did not come out. Luckily I did not like the thing anyway so was not heartbroken. I have no idea why I chose the fabrics. A woman in the small group I was with at the time even asked that question.hehe

I use the yellow mechanical pencils--the pencil, not the lead it yellow, bought in a package at WalMart, in the stationary aisle. The lead is very thin, and with light pressure will make markings that disappear during the quilting. Have never left the markings on a quilt for a long time, perhaps it makes a difference if the markings are fresh.

I use a mechanical #2 pencil with the thinnest lead. So far, so good, no problems. Good luck removing those marks.
