I have always used a pencil to mark with and no problems so far.

I have heard of people using a regular pencil. Never heard anyone say they had a hard time with it. I say go ahead.

I think people who have problems with pencil on a quilt use the pencil on the front of the quilt to mark the quilting lines. I use regular pencil to mark my sewing lines particularly on HSTs. Never had a problem.

I use a pencil quite often ( only on the back or fabric that won't be visible when I am done). I have never had a problem.

I use pencil on embroidery and find that Napisan removes it very easily, soak for about ten minutes and a soft rub or swish and it is gone.

the sew line pencil works great. Do you use a sheet of sand paper ? that helps the fabric from not moving.
