This has been a problem for generations. In a museum I saw a gorgeous pieced and appliqued quilt that dated from the mid-1800s. The quilting designs were marked with graphite pencils and plainly evident all those years later.

I got this "recipe" from a quilt class many years ago for taking out pencil marks. I have even taken just the rubbing alcohol diluted with a little water- works like magic!
1 part water
3 parts rubbing alcohol
1 or 2 drops dish detergent (Palmolive , Joy NOT Dawn)
Apply mixture and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush- follow by washing or wiping with a cloth

I hope you get the marks out! I have only marked one quilt with regular #2 pencil but I heavily starched the top before marking so the marks came out no problem. I read once that if you heavily starch your top before marking the pencil marks are really on your layer of starch not on the fabric. It worked for me.
