Even on the quilting machines. I don't get it.
I have a Bernina, and I can move the needle to make the
1/4". Or pa y $30. for the 1/4" foot. But if you have the
walking foot on, you can't move the needle.

but the best test of your seam width is still to sew 3 pieces (1 1/2" w x 4" long) together on the long sides. press carefully. should measure 3 1/2" wide. adjust by making smaller or larger seam by how this turns out. if it is less than the 3 1/2",you are taking too big a seam. and if it is more, you are taking too small a seam. using fabric that is your project.

If you have a 1/4 inch foot, and all your seams are the same size. it doesn't matter if it isn't exact, it will still be close enough as long as your seams are all the exact same size that is close to 1/4 inch

My Bernina machine came with a really accurate 1/4" foot. I use it all the time for piecing.
I also have an older Baby Lock (about 13 years old) but I have to use the lines on it. Therefore I don't use it for piecing.

Sugar, I have a foot on my Janome and it measures a pretty exact 1/4 inch on the right hand side of the needle. As long is this is used throughout piecing your patches it will be quite accurate. Until you get used to it, use a piece of tape on the right side and before you know you won't need it. God bless and Merry Christmas. Quilting Joan
