When I make a piano key border usually the strips are different widths because I'm using up more scraps. This quilt is for a wounded soldier at Ft. Hood Army base in Texas. http://tinyurl.com/j77wnkb

If you have short pieces, you can sew a different piece on to make it longer for a scrappier look. A lot depends on the look of the top. IF it is symmetrical and balanced, I would go with same width strips for the border. If the top is more scrappy, anything goes.

I have made a lot of piano key borders. I use whatever width I have, usually I put narrow strips in between wider ones. I use all differnt lengths also and cut them to whatever size I want the border to be.

I also use piano keys borders for a lot of my quilts. I just cut the strips from all my scraps then use them as leaders or ender (bonnie hunter style) then they are ready when I need them. Strips are all different sizes. The quilters on this board amaze me, these quilts are all beautiful.
