Eleanor Burns has a video where she does a piano key border and to make the mitered corner she does it like a corner stone. Just makes a HST's from strip blocks and attaches them like they are a cornerstone. I'm pretty sure it is Dessert Time if you check YouTube.

The only piano key border I tried, started to be wonky right away, so I bought tissue paper, cut it to the finished size and width I wanted each piece to be (I did have to sew some finished sections to each other after sewing the keys due to short strips of tissue). My border was four inches wide, so I got out my 4”-6” x 2” scraps and folded each in half the short way, and used the crease to line the strips up ignoring the length as long as it met or passed the tissue paper edge. When I was done with all the strips, I trimmed the fabric even with the tissue. (Think creative cheater paper piecing). I then attached the piano border to the center section. Everything stayed straight and no wonkiness.
