    Default Piece Sizes

I have lots of "scraps" that I would like to cut into strips, rectangles and squares. Is there a chart of the most common sizes used in quilting. I am not comfortable with sizes under 2 inches, so that's really not an option for me.

    Thanks

I cut most of mine into 2-1/2 and 4-1/2 strips and squares.

I doubt I would precut until I found a pattern to make.

I cut mine into the largest size the scrap will allow.
There are so many patterns for scraps that you can use most all size cuts.
Im saving up scraps that Ive made into 3 1/2 in HST's to make an all HST quilt.
There is an out of print book by Nancy Zieman that uses different size strips from 1 1/2 in to 5 1/2 in. I just ordered a copy from Amazon, they have more, it was less than $2 plus shipping.
Its a must have and have been looking for it for a while. Saw the 3 part video on CNNTV and loved it.
Oh the book is call Scrap Happy Patchwork

I wait to cut till I have settled on the pattern I want to use. The sizes used in scrap quilting can vary a great deal. I understand your wanting to tidy up the scrap bin... but having a pattern will be the most effective/efficient way to decide.

what kind of quilts do you make? what size do you generally use?
start with the largest size you can get from the fabrics- then work your way down- layer cakes are 10" square- charms are 5" square. water color squares are often 2 1/2" square-
log cabin/pineapple blocks can have strips anywhere from 1" on up to how ever wide you want.
when i decided i needed some (scrap therapy) i cut fabrics first 10" squares- then 6 1/2", 5", 4 1/2", 3" & 2 1/2"...all stacked neatly into a tote- the strips i kept strips- if they were less than 2" i put them into my basket for wrapped clothesline and rug hooking projects- the rest i cut into 2 1/2" strips....it works for me- but you need to decide what works for you....dependant upon what you will use.
