Piecing? Quilting? or both?

I used to like it all. But for health reasons, quilting (hand or machine) is out for me, so now I just love the rest of it... except for putting the borders on. I hate to put borders on (thus most of my quilts get maybe a narrow inner & somewhat wider outer solid border). But I think my very favorite part is basting & then hand sewing the binding to the back. Yes, I know I need professional help... LOL!

I love looking at and buying fabrics, looking at patterns in magazines and online, I love piecing the top, but I kind of stall once the top is done! I can only quilt my own if they are baby/lap size, just have a regular sewing machine. Just starting one that's gonna be for my son's wedding, planning on sending it out to be quilted. Going to be all blue dresdens.

I dread the cutting part because I have such a hard time with accuracy and that's key to how your quilt will turn out. When sewing the pieces together I get lost in never never land and time flies. I have a long arm so putting them together and quilting is no problem.

I like all of it. I like piecing & choosing my fabrics/colors & all the rest. Sometimes I do just detail special panels & those come out nice too. I enjoy the FMQ too, except my machine has a rather small throat & I can't do bigger quilts, so am saving for a new machine with a bigger throat to maximize my potential for fun. :-)

I love ironing the fabric, cutting the fabric and sewing the fabric together to make the quilt and then ironing the top and cutting the stray threads. Then I turn it over to a LAer. I only like binding if I do the two fabric machine sewn method.

I love the whole process, even hand sewing the binding. I just love the fact that I can do the whole quilt from start to finish myself and then I feel that it's truly mine. Have a friend who loves to piece but not quilt. She keeps wanting to trade me - she'll piece for me if I quilt for her. She does great work (a better piecer than I am) but then I wouldn't feel like it was "my quilt".

I go in cycles. Mostly I love it all (though sometimes I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with various aspects). Love fabrics! While sometimes cutting can be tedious, I try not to be in a rush and enjoy the process, thereby making it more relaxing. Somewhere in the middle of piecing, I get tired of it and just want to be done! I do not enjoy basting the quilt part together. The more I practice my FMQ skills, the more I like it. When it's going smoothly, I love it. Then again, somewhere in the middle of that process I find my eye/mind wandering to another project. I really don't care for binding, BUT since I have decided I will become proficient at machine binding (front and back) - that task is a bit less tedious. Maybe someday I will find it relaxing to hand stitch - but that day is not today!
I find that if I have a couple of different projects going, so I can switch back and forth, that helps keep away boredom. Also, I quit telling myself that I *need* to do this or that (such as - I need to learn more complex piecing skills). Now, I just allow myself to go where I feel drawn. If it is a simple project - great! If it happens to be more complex and I am really drawn to it - great! And - I allow myself to be open to new ideas, I try not to say *never* or *always*. Leaves myself open to new experiences, new ways of doing things.
