I buy most of my embroidery patterns from Embroidery Library.com. Love that site.

I tried my first block. I tried the 5" square and sewed all around but when I cut them, they only ended up 5 1/2 ". so I cut the 5 in square in half and made four and they came out to 8 1/2. Not the 9" like everyone is saying. Maybe I did something wrong?

These are two different methods and end up with very different sizes.
In the sew around the edges they come out around 5.8" unfinished or 5.3" finished. Some are trimming to 5.5" unfininshed for 5" finished.

In the Lay two squares on top of each, draw a diagonal line, sew on each side of line, cut on the line, trim to 4.5" then do it again for 4 parts you should come to an 8.5" unfinished or 8" block when finished.

I've assembled about 13 blocks (sewed, but not cut) and put together my first 2 blocks late last night, just to make sure I could do this.

These are the first pinwheels I've ever made, not too shabby. :)

Ok...it's just gone 9pm in the UK and my first ever pinwheel is finished...
Personally, I like to have a purpose for a quilt and mine hopefully will go to my very best friend who lived in the same village with me for 22 years...she left last year when her husband became a minister and they moved to Cornwall...she loves blue....so just another 75 to go but it would make a wonderful Christmas gift !
