    I've always called it twisted squares, although interlocking squares does sound a better name.

    Jill, thank you for posting a picture of your project. I was studying the original and was having difficulty in determining how it was put together. Your photo helped. I don't think this is a beginner's project as it looks like there could be some partial seams. Looks like it will require some graph paper, pencil and eraser.

    Instead of the star, you could just use a plain block or a fussy cut block for the center.

    Looks to me to be lots of HSTs rather than partial seams. Get out the graph paper and start drawing and I'll bet you have it figured out in no time.
