Default Please I need math help with churn dash

I am working on a quilt and the last two blocks are both churn dash. One squares up at 5 inches (the center square is cut at 2 1/2 inches with 1 1/4 in rectangles. The other squares up at 12 1/2 inches and the center block for it is cut at 5 inches with 1 1/4 in rectangles). I cannot figure out what size square to start with to make the HSTs in the corner for either one. I am ready to throw this quilt away!

If anyone can understand what I am trying to say - could you help?

I think the measurements in the instructions are wrong but it very likely could just be me. All I know is I need help!!! LOL

    Thanks for any reply.

This quilt is so pretty. Don't give up. I will give you some suggestions...the top left churn dash has what look like green sashing strips. I would make the hst the same width as those so if they are 2 1/2 half then cut the hst at 2 1/2. I hope that make sense.
For the bottom churn dash... does it have sashing strips as well. If it does I would do the same with those hst as the top one. I hope this fixes your problem, if not I am sure someone who is better at this than me will chime in with some good advice.
Also, something I noticed was that on the top churn dash you have the flying geese unit on the bottom turned the wrong way. Just take the sashing strip off and turn it around.

    Good luck,Gina

I'm the worst at math so I'm not going to chime in with an answer ... but wanted to say I really like the quilt!!

I can't figure out what goes with what in the top left block, but in the bottom right block take the measurement of the dark green and tan strips after they are sewn together and add 7/8". Cut 2 squares (of dark green (and whatever the other side of that HST is) and cut them that measurement. Sew in the usual HST way and I think you'll have 2 squares that fit those corners. Try in on trash fabric and see if it works.

Thank you so much, going to go give that a try right away. Sorry about that picture I only have parts of the block up there. It is a 5" churn dash inside a 12 1/2" one.

Will let you know how I make out. Thanks again.
