I'm not that familiar with what's available now - but I think that having it running properly and hassle free would be very important to avoid frustration on her part.

I would find a vintage Singer 301 or 301A. If your lucky you will find one for under $100.00 dollars but they are worth twice that amount. I have found several for $25.00 to $50.00. Try Craigslist or Yahoo group SewItsForSale. They are the bigger sister to the Featherweight and have been around for years doing their job without problems. They sew beautifully and are light enough to be taken to classes and are easy to maintain yourself without having to pay to have them annually serviced. No computer chips or boards to have to deal with and they are heavy enough that they don't bounce around the table when you have your pedal to the metal.

I would go with a Brother. This model is one that several people I know have purchased and are very happy with it. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Brother-Co...S6000I/4764726 It comes with a case, an extension table, quilting foot, walking foot and a bunch of other stuff. It's a great machine according to the friends I know who have gotten it for themselves/others.

I'm not a beginner, but I am self taught. I had a Singer for years, then Jim got me the Brother SQ9000 three years ago. I love it. It does lots of stuff and was only $199.
