Good morning! I agree that a medium dark blue, thin border should be first maybe only 1" (1 1/2"with seams). Then it could be enlarged by adding a 3" border of a neutral fabric in a thin geometric print as in the 3rd row down and 3rd block from the right on your quilt then finally followed by another 1" border of the same blue as the first blue border.
If I chose to do a piano key it would just be two colors, blue and a neutral, since there is so much color in the quilt proper. That's just me :-).

It is amazing how often that happens. I am not a fan of the color orange, but, I made a fishing quilt for a new nephew and the fabric was a blue and orange fish print. It turned out to be one of my favorite baby quilts! I like your quilt because it not only has so many colors but also a variety of sizes of prints. It gives it a very textural feeling. For this one, I would use a darker color to frame it out. Use your favorite. Are you more of a blue person? green? or brown person? If so, I would use a pure blue(more royal than navy) or a deep hunter green or a dark chocolate. If you need a larger border area, perhaps use 2 of these colors for a double border (the inner the same size as you small squares and the outer one 2 or 2 1/2 times that size.

I agree. Add one more row of blocks and then bind.

I like plum for a border as well.

I like the idea of a small border and then a piano key one using scraps. Binding dark. Very pretty to me.

I would agree on using a darker solid border

Auditioning many colors next to the quilt will tell you what looks best for you. I would do a solid or fabric that reads as solid. IMHO

This may sound completely counter-intuitive to the other comments here, but here goes my idea....

Since you seem to have named it "Plum Ugly", I would dig through my stash and find the ugliest material that I have on hand and use that for the border.
I truly think the scrappy aspect of the rest of the quilt will actually pull the attention away from the ugly fabric and make it fit with the quilt... and it would be especially appropriate if the "ugly" fabric was purple/plum/puce.

This way, you get that ugly out of your stash, you have a "valid" reason for the name, and you have the larger quilt you were wanting.

Hey, you asked for our input, right?

BTW, I don't think it's ugly at all!!!

I would put a narrow black border on it then another border made like your sashing & again another black border. I think it would frame it nicely & make all the colors pop. I really like how it came out. Not at all ugly.

I agree with others you suggest you make the quilt larger by adding more quilt blocks, then just bind it
No borders. It's a cool scrappy quilt.
