I have a problem making my points come out so I have 1/4 to sew on boarder. I doing a 4 point star. 2 points came out perfect other two are right on the edge with no room for boarder without cuting off the point. I've redone it twice and still can't get it. Is there a secret to great points?

Trimming points is tricky. Did you trim the point piece before sewing it into the block? If you don't measure from the correct corner to corner it will come out with blunted points.

also are you doing a scant 1/4" this also helps getting the points to come out right.

Are you sure your seams are 1/4 on all sides? When I was having more trouble with accurate seams this was more of usually the problem. I also make sure to square every segment of the block as I assemble. If the segment is a 4.5 inch block, I make sure to find the exact center at 2.25 inches and line up my 45 degree angle with seams or corners. I know it sounds like a pain in the tush but the final block is usually right on the money. Oh, and press each seam.

If you are not pressing your seams open, you might want to try it. Stars are the one thing that I always press seams open on. It may not work for others, but I really like it.

I use a scant 1/4 inch but when I cut fabric for stars I always cut generously and at each step of the way measure and trim carefully. This way if I need to adjust any seam, I can, and have adequate fabric to do so.
