Default Poor unloved quilt (sorry it's kind of long)

Last summer I collected lots of material so I could make a quilt for my daughter's boyfriend/future husband. He worked in construction and lived most of his life in motels going from job to job and I thought it would be nice to have a piece of family with him. I spent loads of money on the material. Well, the relationship is over, he had a past that he kept well hidden. We are all heartbroken. I didn't want to throw out the fabric which had already been cut to size, but couldn't bear to make a quilt that I associated with him. My husband came up with the idea of making a quilt out of a totally different pattern and give it to a friend of his. So once my brain switched gears I was all for it. I can put lots of love into it, just for a different person. I really need to get this out of here. The top is almost complete, just one more border needs to get put on, hopefully tomorrow. I have a black poly batting that I can use for it and a bolt of blue fabric for the back. I have dark blue and tan 40wt threads for the borders, but the big question is what color to quilt the main top. Blue? Tan? Grey? Green? Teal? I'd appreciate all suggestions as anything I use will show and I really can't put a lot more thought into it. The quilting is just going to be straight lines, nothing fancy. It's intended for a man. Thanks for any help.

That's beautiful! I think quilting in gray would look great.

Gray is my go to color. Glad someone will enjoy your labors .

I love the colors in this quilt. And count your blessings your daughter found out about this guy before they tied the knot! It may be heartbreaking now but much less so than if the discovery of his past happened much later after they had children.

Gray can be iffy sometimes. I have found that I often need to audition gray by puddling a bunch of the thread on different areas of the quilt. Some grays are too brownish or tend to go to the warm color spectrum, others are the opposite and go to the cool and are too white or blue looking.

I have found that a soft gold seems to play nicely with everything, much like the shade of tan on your inner border. Another color that seems to go with everything is moss green or some people call it pea soup green.

Great quilt top and I might do a simple cross hatch pattern in teal if it blends with the backing!

I think feline fanatic's suggestion to puddle various colors of threads on the top might help you decide.

I like the top a lot.

It's hard to deal with when people are not what you thought they were.

I would probably use navy blue or at least a dark blue.

On reading your post my first thought was "Good thing she found out before she married him". I'm not discounting your feelings at all though.
It's a lovely quilt and I think gray would be nice as well.
