The last time I made potholders I used two layers of Quilter's Dream cotton. I think it was the next to thinnest one and not the thinnest. Nobody has complained. A couple of people have mentioned they'd like some new ones when I have time. I'm still using mine too. I think I made them around 2003 or maybe 2004 for Christmas. So I guess it's time for a new batch. I use 8 inch blocks for mine.

I do as Froggoey. I try to use three layers and my turn out great. I use a nine inche square and use ribbon for hanger to match. I quilt with at least an X.

That's also what I do. Mostly start with a muslin foundation piece, put a layer of insulbright, top it with W&N and then strip piece it. After I square it, I bind it and have got a colorful and very usable hot pad. froggyintexas

If you don't mind could you PM me with the directions for these. I use my cast iron skillets a not & these sound like they would be great for lifting the skillets. Thanks if you can, if not I still thank you for posting about them, maybe I can find something that isn't just a oblong hotpad that is a chore to make.

I always used old towels before I heard of insulbrite. I like the way they feel with the old towels.

I use 3 layers of W&N and a quilt block and ugly fabric on the back and quilt it all in an X, then bind it like a quilt. I use an 8" block, usually orphan or a block with a mistake.
I use cast iron cookware, so I need a thick potholder.

I just make a regular potholder, about 7 or 8" square, then fold down one side and sew two sides. What I do is put the top and bottom back to back (right sides together) and lay it on the batting, then sew around 3 sides and the edges of the 4th side. Then clip corners and turn right side out. I machine sew the opening when I am folding in half and sewing it up. Hope this makes sense.

I had to make a couple, the (furnished) place I moved into has pans with metal handles and a gas stove. Those handles heat up FAST!! I miss my old Revereware pots....
