First question. ;)
How much fabric do I need? I want to use the same fabric for the background in each block. The site says one user did this and used about 5 1/2 yd of fabric. How do I know how much fabric to use for the other colors? When you encouraged me to try this you probably didn't think I'd have a question so quickly, did you? lol

On the Quilter's Cache site, she says that a fat quarter will be plenty for 1 block, so I would say figure out how many blocks you need and what yardage it would come to, then add a little leeway in case of mistakes, and if you don't have any mistakes, then you have something to put in your stash. LOL
