If I am making a quilt with turnovers and charms, would I prewash the background fabric and backing? I know not to pre-wash the pre-cuts, but what about the yardage fabric I use with the turnovers/charms and the backing? I have always been a prewasher, so this is new to me. Should I stick to the theory of..."pre-wash it all or not at all?"
    Thanks.

I would wash everything as I had a fabric run after washing.
If using small pieces just swish them in the sink ttowel dry and press. That way you will know if any run and you can treat before hand.

I see you are in Ohio. Are you going to the Columbus show in JUne?
I live just across the river in Canada and Hubby said he would take me.

I wash everything also. If you have a lingerie bag, you could put your charms, etc. in there and wash with the larger fabric.

As much as I would love to go to a quilt show, life is just too busy these days. I live in Akron and Columbus is only a couple of hours from here, but I don't think I will make it.

I always pre-wash. For small pre-cuts I rinse in the sink by hand and press in a towel, then iron dry. The chemicals in the fabric really bothers my hands, and I can't stand the thought of something bleeding after I go to all that work.

Another "do we have a glossary?" question: turnovers?

I wash nothing and haven't had a problem. It's up to you though.

I have come to this conclusion...wash everything or wash nothing. So I will try NOT washing the turnovers and charms, as well as NOT washing the background fabric. That way, if it shrinks, it will all shrink together. I always use color catcher sheets, so I'm not concerned about bleeding.
Thank you all for your advice and comments.

Yep I agree ALL or NOTHING! I myself am a nothing girl mainly out of lazyness now (when I made my first quilt I didn't know I was suposed to wash fabrics prior to cutting and sewing) but I do like the look that unwashed/non-preshurnk fabric gives a quilt after it is made and washed.
