French Chalk is used for marking fabric and/or removing grease. It is a soft talc. I don't have any idea whatsoever why it is called French Chalk, except maybe the French invented it or it is popular with French tailors. I just googled it and this is what came up.

I am getting back to my cleaning now! Edie

I read my wife the entire section of the manual (I have a copy here) and she really got a hoot out of it. But she remembers things like that being taught in school and I can remember my mom doing the same thing when I was growing up.

My mother would always get up at 4:30am and make our lunches and breakfast for everyone in the house and after we went to work/school she always did her hair and makeup (still does to this day) after she made all of the beds and straightened the house up. She came from a very proper southern family and this was the norm back then. I guess thats where I get my traditional ideals from, even though I am a little more modernized.

And just for the record I really do not wear dresses.... LOL!!

All of my treadles have dress guards on them so it was normal then to wear dresses when sewing.

Oh sure, we all put on a nice dress, pearls and high heels to sew. Don't forget the perfume. We go out to eat at night when I sew.
