You could add a border from a fabric on the quilt. I usually cut my backings so that the seam goes crosswise on the quilt. It seems to keep me out of trouble that way. Hope this helps a little. yngldy said basically the same thing. Good luck, you can make it work

Thousands of bolts regularly carries 108" wide backing fabric and Hancocks of Paducah is currently having a sale with many of them being $9 or $10 per yard. 2 1/2 yards at $10 per yard is only $25.00 as opposed to 9 yards of 44" wide at $4.95 if you managed to find a fabric that inexpensive works out to be $44.55
This is what I just did as well. Sure was easy. By the way many, of us have miscalculated the backing for our quilts...frustrating yes! You've got figured now so good luck with the rest of it.

I fell into a similar trap with this quilt

I had always planned to do one off-center strip down the back but when I'd done it I realized the back wasn't going to be wide enough. I had to go back and cut it open, add more strips, and sew it back together to get a wide enough back. In the end, I liked the back a lot but I certainly hadn't planned to do it that way.

I guess I should have figured this out beforehand - if the fabric is 44" wide, when you cut it and sew the two pieces together, it could never be more than 88" wide, including the selvages.

I am so frustrated, as it seems that I always have an issue of the backing coming up short. What am I missing?
I have been quilting for too many years!! I never mastered the math and I always have a problem! I feel your frustration !
