Hi everyone,

I have been asked by a friend to possibly make a baby quilt for her. I would like to know how to price the batting. I always buy it on sale, and when I use the warm and natural I buy it by the roll and I can get two baby quilts out of the length I cut, because I can cut the width in half. The roll I am using now, I bought for about 5.99 yard. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would charge what it costs to replace it. It's easy to get it for 7.50/yd, so that seems reasonable to me. That would make it almost .21/inch. I would charge .20/inch and divide by 2 since you only need half of it.

My theory is charge whatever you would have to pay if you went to the store to buy it. I also charge 7.50/yard. Even though you are only going to use half the cut, I charge the whole amount. You are never really sure if you are going to have a project to use the left over cut portion. Right now, JoAnn's has a Baby quilt size packaged batting for $7.50, so that is another comparison price.

She is your friend, not just any customer. I would charge her exactly how much I paid for it. If you paid $6 / yard and you are using only half width charge her $3 or nothing. I know everybody is tight these days, but she is your friend, a few dollars really do not matter in the big scheme of things when it comes to friendship.

i generally do not (make money) off the batting when i make a quilt for someone- or even supply the batting when i quilt for someone- i charge what it cost me.
or you could check maybe the joanne's web site & see what a comparable batt in the size you need costs-and charge that much.
if you pay shipping/handling/taxes on your batting-be sure to add that too.
