Maybe I didn't clarify this...when I am done making it, I want it to be 12 1/2" unfinished...put together in a quilt it would be 12"...

Thanks..

In the original post you said 12 1/2 finished. Now that you have corrected that to say 12 inch finished 6 1/2 would be correct,

Will a half inch make that much difference? I used 6 1/2" squares for mine and used them as they came out and the roof didn't fall in.

Sorry about the misunderstanding...

Carol, the project I am using the block/s in call for 12 1/2" square, 12 " finished in quilt...yes, it would make a difference as we are exchanging blocks and they all have to be the size required...:)

I always square my blocks so a bit larger is never a bad thing in my mind.

Oh Oh, make a trial square using all the suggestions you are getting. I thought if it were for yourself, it really wouldn't make much difference what size they turned out to be.
But a top with squares from more than one person could be a problem. Bet they won't all be the same anyway.
Let us know how this turns out. I have tried putting together squares made by more than one person and it can be a headache.
Good luck on your project, we will be waiting for a report on the results.

Okay, I will let you guys know...but it will be awhile, but it's our sewing group...I have to make 19 blocks....it's a long story, actually we all make 19 blocks...have a swatch of fabric to color coordinate...then we all exchange blocks and we each have 19 different blocks. We had to indicate which block we were making so there would be no duplicates. Yes, I have done block exchanges before, and yep, 1/4" seams are interesting if you know what I mean.
And making it bigger and squaring it up is better than too small.
Thanks everyone for your tips and advice...Elaine
