I use to find them one bay, new ones, held 100 thimbles, had pleixglass covers, and they were $19.95...now all I can find are way more money than that...............desperate here, I may have to learn to make cases myself..........help............

Sorry . . .i too collect thimbles, have for 30 years . . .and wouldn't know of any place that still sells them for $25. Thing is, quilting cotton used to be $6 a yard, everything is more expensive these days. I see them for $29 that hold about $50 . . .but yes, the larger ones are much more expensive.

There are several 100-thimble cases with plexiglass fronts on Ebay right now for $29.95. I display mine on linotype drawers mounted on the wall.

What kind of thimbles do you collect? Are they all usable, or are some cutesie? (I have been gifted with a china one with my name on it, and a tatted one. I usually quilt with a leather one I made of scraps.)

Mine are primarily gold and sterling, many dating back to Civil War era or earlier, but almost every other material they were made from. Storing is a problem, tho they need so little space. I also collected other sewing smalls..measuring tapes, pin cushions, thimble minders. etc. So some are in thread cabinets, in glass cabinets, and even on walls in printer's trays. It's important to keep records of when you bought and amt you pd for your heirs, or they will end up in a shoe box in a yard sale!

One of my friends north of me had a display case with her thimbles. Just never got into collecting them.

That's how I have mine displayed....pick these up a resale/antique stores..... |
Well, I wish I hadn't clicked on this thread. I just had to go to ebay and look at antique thimbles. Some are beautiful, some are sweet with engraved names, one says "Mother" Anyway, now I will have to add them to my list of beautiful things to collect. There is something about holding an antique and knowing it was used by someone who lived so long ago and now is gone.

I also collect thimbles and use a case that metal letters were stored in to display them on the wall, works perfect.

I have a few but not collectible. My neighbor has a curio cabinet with thimbles and metal buttons. Her husband made a couple for her out of oak branches in their backyard. He has since passed but they are beautiful. He loved to whittle.
