Oh to be rich, beautiful, and own a quilting shop!

Debra Mc 06-08-2010 06:08 PM

Wonder if that includes any sewing machines? The flower shop I use to work for is for sale. They want $300,000.00 for it. The bldg has been there since 1920 & really is falling apart. Has been on the market for 70 months. Nobody beating down the door for it. They are dreaming.

Who's up for a road trip?

Favorite Fabrics 06-08-2010 07:19 PM

Uhhh... so... after reading this post, I've been thinking... if all my colleagues and I decide to retire at the same time (in about 15 years, 'cause we're all about the same age)... and if we don't know what to do with all the fabric ... should I let everyone here know, and sell it off piecemeal?

Is 15 years enough lead time? You know, for folks who like to plan ahead...?

I might finish using up my stash by then ~ ~ ~

Where in Arkansas is this place? WE are traveling through there in a couple of week. Hmmmm may be an interesting stop along with Marshalls.

Well, I did own a quilt shop until reality and this econmy intruded. What a let down. Now I have a very BIG stash of fabric. Eventually I will get it on here. In the meantime any one traveling through eastern WV drop me a line for a look see.

eiltcoq 06-09-2010 04:18 AM

Mountain deb, What kind of fabric do you have? If you post pictures, you will be able to sell it on the Board. Eiltcoq.

It is a matter of getting myself motivated to list and of course parting with all this fabric. Mostly Moda, Haufman, Kaufman, Blank and misc.. Most everything will be 40 to 60% off retail price. Sooooo stay tuned in for future postings.

Sorry. Not me. We will beat you to retirement, and my DH wants to travel when we do!
Just noticed where you are located. My DS called yesterday and asked me about coming to visit (Rochester, NY) So I may get a chance to stop in on the way! Hooray! Always up for a new quilt shop experience!

$75K seems like a lot...

I agree, but it all depends on the condition of all the shelving and display racks etc, as they are all included, not just the fabrics.

2 months of intensive taking of photos, composing descriptions and determining my pricing, I eventually managed to get them all listed in my EBay Store.

It took me about 1-1/2 years to sell just about all - I think I only have about 120 metres left from the lot and I managed to make back my initial cash outlay and have realized a comfortable profit.

Was it worth the time and effort? Possibly but in hindsight, I don't think I will do it again as it took far more of my time and energy than I had expected and that of course took away from too much time from my other interests.

You would likely have far more success in selling quilting fabrics in a shorter time period than the designer fabrics I ventured with (these fabrics were for those interested in sewing their own garments).

You may want to seriously look at how much time and energy to want to put into taking on such an endevour but if you do and you're lucky, you could probably turn a good profit.

Good luck and hopefully, you'll post some in the forum - from the photos, there appears to be some really nice fabrics, etc.

I was given --by default--4 volvo estate carloads FULL of quilt fabric from an 84 yr old lady who had left it to her friend who decided she was going to put it in a skip!!
the fabric was dated/yardage noted/and place where purchased ; I did not quilt then but couldn't see this being wasted, so I went around quilting groups selling fabric at least half price if not more and gave the remainder away ; it was a lot of work but raised over £1.000 for dog rescue.

Billy

you would load it all up in a u-haul bring it home and sell it to your fellow quilters on the board. lol

Forgive me if this was asked before, I quickly read through the msg threads....

I noticed that this is listed on the Memphis craigslist. Did this store aside from the owner passing, have any flood damage from the recent storms?

If they did, FYI, make sure those purchasing fabrics wash everything at least twice. Living in a warm, wet environment causes mildew and mold, and not the fun kind. Some types can also damage or discolor fabrics. (Experience from a broken water heater drenching part of my stash).

AnnaK 06-09-2010 10:24 AM

Where's Marsye? Is she already over there loading it into the U-Haul?

It is in Arkansas somewhere around Eddie I think. He said he has shopped there before so I am thinking its close by him.

It's in Sheridan, which is just a little South of Little Rock in central Arkansas.

I've been trying to find some of the Moda (I think Three-Sisters) Aviary line. I bought all the charm packs I could find, but would love to have some yardage. Do you know if you have any of that on hand. Maybe we could work out a deal. :-)

Wish I could help, but do not have that line.

Where is this located in Arkansas? Is the store open at all? Just curious-love fabric. :>)

Just noticed where you are located. My DS called yesterday and asked me about coming to visit (Rochester, NY) So I may get a chance to stop in on the way! Hooray! Always up for a new quilt shop experience!

There are some really good quilt shops here in the Rochester area. Jackie Lynn's in Irondequoit, Mt. Pleasant in York, Ivy Thimble in Victor, Patricia's in East Rochester, and Scarlet Thread in Webster. Happy hunting!

Quilt Mom 06-11-2010 09:07 AM

Juneeloonee, thanks for the heads-up on the quilt shops in the Rochester area. My DS is involved in weaving, so knows very little about the quilt shops, etc. She said we could explore. Now we have some destinations! :-D

Since we do most of our sales online, it means that we're only open weekdays, from 9-5. For us, it's the best of both worlds... we get to see and play with the fabric, but have "normal" working hours. I'd just hate for you to plan a trip, only to find out that we're closed if you're coming through on a weekend!

Quilt Mom 06-11-2010 09:33 AM

Thanks for the info on your hours. It does sound like the best of both worlds! I'll see if I can travel during the week instead of on a weekend. Most likely, it will be fall before I can travel... Summer commitments, you know.

You're welcome. Each store is unique but have great finds! Probably my favorite is Jackie Lynn's. Have a ball.
