I like the 9 6" wide because I can easily fit the length of a queen size quilt without piecing the batting. And 18 yards for $50 is the best buy I have found. (I know! I have deeply researched batting! :))

I use this batting from WalMart too. Good buy - no complaints.

In a pinch, I have used felt as batting in a baby quilt. Seems to be surviving since it is now being used for a second child. I figured it is polyester, so why not.

I am with you! The batting seems very expensive and hate that. I have learned to watch Amazon. their prices change and I buy it when its on a down price. I have also learned to buy it in a roll (if you are going to use that much) it is alot to put out at once, but its much cheaper that way for me

Connecting Threads has been a good place to buy batting. They run specials often.

Many years ago I got some really inexpensive blankets from either K-mart or Walmart, that ended up being several dollars cheaper that batting and it made nice think quilts.

I have used the blizzard fleece from JoAnns as batting. Watch for a sale and buy a whole bolt of white. I donated some quilts that were going to a womens shelter. I used the fleece. I figured it made it more durable.

I am not able to afford that. so what is the alternative, is there really any? I do have some flannel blankets, but is that worthwhile to use? mine are a bit thicker than that batting, so what can I use?

I use 80/20 batting.
Check on OVERSTOCK.com. I got a whole roll 90" wide x 20 yds (w/coupon in an email) for $77.00 shipping free. BUT they have single bags as well. Also I often buy Hobbs' 80/20 off Craftsy as their prices are also terrific.

I also just use a wide zig zag stitch to join pieces of batting, works great.

Does Michael's sell batting?
