I have two patterns that use small pieces of batting. So every once in a while, I cut up my scraps into circles for the reversible apple core quilt. The other one uses 8" squares. You do have to use all the same type, but that's not a problem for me, I mostly use the same brand and thickness of batting.

Way to go...
|
zig zag together and make larger pieces and use for give away quilts.
|
I know what I'm doing today!
|
I make hot pads, doll blankets, place matts. You might google to see what else you can use these for. I usually just donate to Goodwill, as there are people looking for bargins to do their projects.
|
This is what I've been doing too, I'm using them in some charity quilt tops before I start on my new roll of batting.
|
You are wayyyyyy tooooo organized (LOL). I just sewed a bunch of strips and pieces together so I could cut them into 8 1/2 squares for 7 raggy quilts I am working on. However, I certainly didn't cut into strips and mark them - but like the idea. Thanks for sharing.

LOL, It's always nice when the pets help!
|
Great job!! I do the same thing w/scraps that are given to me through my guild.

I have tried the tape and it works well. It could get a bit pricey though if you used it a great deal. Otherwise it's okay. |

I like the idea of the scarves out of flannel. May do that with some of my scraps and send them to Pine Ridge in the next box I send out. |
has any one thought to butt batting as you go along ?That way it saves collecting lots of small pieces .

i still have a drawer full of batting scraps to do, but this is what i accomplished .. i marked on finished sizes on a post it note.. Ladies, i did not mean for you to think i was organized..ROFL i just decided it was time to sew them together and quit buying more batting off the bolt, when i had plenty here! besides, it rained all day here yesterday!! today is sun shine and beauty here in Michigan,no sewing or organizing! |
Need to do this myself. Thanks for sharing.
|
very ambitious of you and you did such a great job! the last 2 wall hangings i made i did the same thing. It's a little time consuming but why not use the pieces and save some money in this economy :-D
|
I just recently did this & it makes it so much easier to find the right size piece when you need one. I have seen the iron-on tape advertised to piece together batting & I thought there must be something less expensive. I cut light weight iron-on interfacing about 3 inches wide & length I needed & ironed with a medium heat. It worked great.
|
Smart idea, Kim. I need to follow your example. Thanks for the nice information.

All my batting scraps get cut up or pieced to make a lap quilt.
I do a lot of quilt-as-you-go and Reversible Quilts (see Sharon Pederson) and use tons of 13 or 7 inch blocks. Anything smaller gets sewn together until the piece is large enough for a lap quilt. I only make one wall hanging a year, I think, so would otherwise never use up the mounds of batting that accumulate. I didn't originate the idea, but it does keep my leftover batting from ovewhelming me! BTW, by doing this all at once, I discovered that the original Soft and Crafty ultraloft (for tying quilts) had been cheapened. The original stuff WAS 3/4 inch thick while the current stuff never measures even 1/2 inch. Really irritating. |
I use batting scraps for the Quilt as you go method. the real small ones stuffing for animals that I donate to the hospital.
|
I square up, measure and mark all my batting too!
|
Thats how I join mine.your furbaby looks cute sitting there.
|
I bought the iron on tape and it works great. Need to get all my scraps organized. A rainy day today so maybe I will get that done plus cut out fabric for a future project and then do some quilting on a pinned quilt. Need to get off the board

As for those times when there isn't enough batting at the end of a quilt...the tape works great! I grab a slice of batting from my corner and fuse two together....not sure how I made it before the fusing tape...it was a nightmare. I bought a cordless steam iron and that has also made fusing the tape to the batting a real breeze. I love organization, and I love organized people....I just wish I were one! Michelle I've only pieced batting once. I love your method. Thanks. |
I use small scrap pieces as stuffing when I polyfil a pillow and use those scraps in the middle of the stuffing. There have been some really great ideas you all have come up with. That's why I like this board so much.

(stitch and flip style) mug rugs and small projects, and baby quilts.. just zig zag them together.. |
Hey wolph, don't be horning in on my pies!

Love it! I will now take my full garbage bag & do this! Thanks for sharing!

I think it is wonderful that you can use your batting scraps so resourcefully. I save mine too and either sew pieces together to use on a larger project, small projects and practicing FMQ. Some is saved for projects that need a stuffing too.

but at least, for me, having the measurements on the pieces i sewed together, will make me be more thrifty! i don't always need to grab a coupon and get batting, if i have some already to go! i never start a FMQ project without practicing on a sandwich! i need to get loose! |
OMG! I understand as I have boxes of batting. Thanks for posting as it gives me some ideas on what sizes to cut to organize.
|
I think you have found the best way to use up those weird sized pieces.
|
Great idea. I never thought to use my quilting foot.
