I would go out so if it hangs over something the characters would be right side up, not upside down.
If it's bed size, etc., I'd face them out for over hang down the sides. Personally, I like them facing out even on a lap quilt.
I definitely think the 2nd picture which I would call facing in.
I would put it outside. But it is your choice really. No quilt police here.
In graphic design, the rule is to print with items facing in. Therefore, I always face pints inward.
I like the second picture!!! Really want to see the whole quilt now - Looks like its a great reproduction quilt!!!
Facing IN looks better
Borders "in" is my vote!
I say just go with whatever suits you. I don't really think that there is a "right" or "wrong" way. It's your creation. Have fun and enjoy yourself. This is only my opinion, but from looking at these pics, if I was making it myself I'd go with the bottom picture with the characters facing in. Whatever you choose, I think it's a really cute quilt!

I think "in" looks best - cute quilt by the way :)
Much better facing in -- otherwise too many standing on their heads! LOL
I think a big confusion is what is facing in and what is facing out. To me facing in is when they're standing on their heads. Their faces are closer to the inside of the border. I can't see how that would be considered facing out.
I like the second look better. Please let us know which way your going to attach this beautiful border.
Love the fabric. Either way it will be nice. :)

If you had enough fabric, have you ever considered a compromise between "in" or "out" -- sideways? Each side w/ the characters running parallel to the quilt? It's all up to you -- there's no wrong way!!
what about both ways?
That would be cute -- 2 sides each way!
LOVE that border fabric.. Of course I think those vintage prints make the cutest baby quilts... Let the baby see them facing the right way. and then let us see it all finished!
I am thinking in looks best, more pleasing to they eye.
I would do out, just me :-D :-D :-D
To me, it looks as though the little kids have their backs turned to the quilt when they face out. I like them facing in, but it is just personal preference. Very cute!

I like it facing in, just me. |
I think that looks better in also. Darling border print.
Holba it doesn't matter if they are facing in or out. Follow your gut. IMHO the most important thing is to be consistent, I.e., make sure all borders face the same way. Gramily

Thanks everyone!!!! You are all so nice!! I love this site and have not quilted for 3 years because of health issues. So, I have just read all your words almost daily and vicariously have enjoyed quilting!! Well, now I know facing in and out mean different things to different people. So... I looked at lots of quilt patterns and just decided to DO IT and I did them "facing out" which was the second picture. Although the border is cute - I have changed the blocks twice and then changed the sqares between blocks so I hate the quilt and then because I made the borders too big there is no longer the backing fabric I had bought so I ditched work in the morning yesterday and bought new backing fabric. I will post when done - this is the first quilt I have not liked and it is for my first grandchild!! However, I am sure when done it will be okay. So again thanks!!!!!

Cute fabric - I like the layout in the second photo best
