Once you find your fabrics which will probably be limited in numbers, consider doing a Disappearing Nine patch. I particularly like the one from LynBrown.com called Magic twist and Stitch 9 patch. I used it for a super heros quilt for my grandson and put a superhero in each plain block and then used coordinating colors for the others. It turned out very well.

How FAR retro do you need to go? 1980's, 1950's, 1930's or into the 1800's. Is there some agreement about what the term means?

If you embroider, obtain an old coloring book, copy the pictures, make some blocks to embroider and the spacer blocks in your favorite pattern.
