I've used coats and clark too. And well I ended up switching thread because I think my machine is a thread snob too. I now buy my thread at my LQS.

Sunflower Girl 03-16-2011 03:05 AM

My Husky 875 doesn't like it. It seems to have more lint than the better quality thread. Just my two bits!

If I remember correctly, you have a Janome 4400? My 6600 works a treat with YLI soft touch for piecing (I'm in the UK too!). I used to buy it online from Jaycotts but they seem to have stopped stocking it, however two of my LQS stock it. I also use Aurifil for piecing and quilting and Masterpiece and King Tut for quilting, Bottom Line in the bobbin. Superior Threads (ie the last 3 I mentioned) I get online from http://www.craftyquilter.co.uk/ . Joanna there is brilliant, excellent fast service and will get you any colour you like if she doesn't have it in stock. She got me the shadecards which are made up with real thread so you can order the colour you want with confidence.

I have no experience of Coats though, sorry. I have a friend with the same machine as I and in addition to YLI and Superior, she also uses Mettler with great success I believe, for quilting. :-D

I use Coats & Clark for most all my sewing. The only problem I have is sometimes when I'm hand sewing it will get weak at the needle. I have to remember to move it every so often so it moves down the thread. I know one prize winning quilter who uses C & C exclusively because of the little wisps on the thread. It makes the quilting look better for her. I've taken a class from her and she says it is the best thread for her to use.

thenonnielady 03-16-2011 03:28 AM

My machines do not like C&C.....I use for handsewing.
My love of the moment is Aurafil.

pieces 03-16-2011 03:52 AM

I would not use this thread for quilting. A low quality thread.

BethD 03-16-2011 04:05 AM

I use Coats & Clarks machine quilting thread and have had no problem but have had problems in the past with the dual duty.

Thanks for this. My machine is a Janome 4800 and at the moment NO thread works for quilting! Am waiting for the Janome bobbin case for FMQ to arrive. I like Superior threads too. When I started quilting I tried YLI, but my machine hates it: the top thread always jams. Love Superior's invisible thread: it's so soft, and even my temperamental beast will do good in-the-ditch quilting with that and Bottom Line. I was just curious about the Coats thread because I've never seen it here before, and it would be useful when I need some thread quickly because John Lewis are stocking it -replacing the late-lamented Sylko, I think.

I think you mean me K? :D

Just to be specific, it's Mettler "Silk Finish" I like for quilting, in case anyone thinks its Mettler Quilting.
Silk Finish is a 50/3 and therefore finer than the 40/3 quilting thread.

Rumbols 03-16-2011 04:30 AM

I use Coats & Clark with no problems. I have Janome 6600P and it has no problems with the thread. I also use it for appiques for years without any problems.

roadrunr 03-16-2011 04:40 AM

I've had no problem with c&c dual duty - I use them all the time, but I usually get it at Hancock's when it is half price.

applique 03-16-2011 04:56 AM

I have spools of C&C and DD that I need to get rid of. I think some that say Star and Coats came from Connecting Threads! I use a heavier weight for my applique.

I agree with Candace. In my opinion, it is of very low quality. It was once known as Coats and Clark, and for many years was a good quality mercerized cotton thread, but I don't see the quality anymore. They first changed the cotton thread for general sewing to cotton /polyester thread, and then to polyester, and the colors are not the same, probably because polyester doesn't take the dye the same as cotton. I get a lot of lint and breakage from the Coats thread now, and I don't recommend it. It will cost you more to buy a good quality cotton thread for your quilt making, but it will be worth it !

Quilter7x 03-16-2011 05:02 AM

My Bernina likes C&C Star thread (big spools, online only from JoAnn's) for FMQ. I do have some spools of C&C regular thread that I use on the Janome and have not had any problems with it, but most of my thread is Gutterman.

this is all we had for year and years. It is good and holds up well. They have Poly now. used to get only cotton. their mainstay is cotton covered poly core, which is strong and works great. It is not cheep thread. give it a try.

The one and only! :D

CarrieAnne 03-16-2011 05:21 AM

I use it, but most of mineis older from Garage sales, so I am not sure of the quality of the newer ones.

sharoney 03-16-2011 05:23 AM

I find that it tends to shred and break. I don't use it except sometimes for piecing.

rannyof3 03-16-2011 05:27 AM

That is the thread I've used for years too and never had a problem.

Para722 03-16-2011 05:43 AM

I would not use coats and clark thread. I never works right in my machine.

mhansen6 03-16-2011 06:05 AM

I have used Coats thread and I will use up what I have, but I won't buy it again. It produces was too much lint. My new machine is very sensitive to lint and I have to clean it often. There are other higher quality threads that don't produce the lint.

babyboomerquilter 03-16-2011 06:08 AM

Iv'e used it for years and it seems to work just great for me. I also have used much cheaper thread and it works too, the durability is just not there for the long term of washings

nativetexan 03-16-2011 06:14 AM

i'm using them in my bobbin fine but somehow had bought some that was polyester covered polyester and it shredded in my needle when used on top doing free motion quilting. i even changed needles. i usually bought cotton. but still, i can use it in the bobbin.

GlitzyMe 03-16-2011 06:32 AM

My two Featherweights use them with no problem at all but the Viking doesn't like them at all. Because of the irregularities in the thread they build up lint and break easily. For that machine I use, Presencia, Metrosene or Gutermann. Experiment with your machine(s).

charsue 03-16-2011 07:01 AM

It could be because they started sending it to Mexico to be manufactured. Was wonderful thread when made in the states. Cheap labor, ya know.

Roxanne 03-16-2011 07:08 AM

I'm one of those who buys whatever is available. Usually that means C&C at Walmart. I had not had any problems until my last purchase which kept breaking and linting like crazy. I had bought 3 spools and couldn't use it. I went to Joanns and bought some gutterman to finish my project. I really like this thread!

I have heard several sewing machine technicians say not to use it - it is terrible for the machines.

I agree with Lisa

mjsylvstr 03-16-2011 08:49 AM

I use the all 100% cotton from Coats..also use their hand quilting and their machine quilting threads..and I am very happy with them....more so than some of the more pricey ones.

BellaBoo 03-16-2011 08:57 AM

The newer Coats thread is not as linty and much smoother then it use to be. Coats and Clark has started to sponsor more of the quilt exhibits, designers, and shows so their thread will be soon be endorsed just as much as the other best thread brands.

BellaBoo 03-16-2011 09:16 AM

A co worker use to own a small sewing factory that contracted sewing some clothes dept stores. He did all the sewing machine repairs. He said if the machines had outside threading lint wasn't a big concern, just clean when you see the lint. It's the inside threading the new machines have that lint build up will cause damage. You can't see or get to the lint in them. Vintage machines have outside threading with lots of thread guides. Thread guides are very useful for a good stitch. It's cheaper to make a machine with inside treading and horizontal spool spindles and few thread guides. The savings can go into other features of the machines that most want these days.

grandme26 03-16-2011 09:19 AM

I use coats and clark mainly because I can get it at WalMart. The all cotton does have a habit of balling up and breaking if you do not whatch it closely. No problems with the others.

martha jo 03-16-2011 10:03 AM

My Berninas don't like any thread that makes lint. I use Metrosene or Presencia.

paulas 03-16-2011 10:17 AM

I just sent my thread snob machine back to the shop because once again I used C and C thread in it. It kept breaking and finally got stuck somewhere in the machine's guts. Fortunately my machine only needed cleaning, but I will never buy Coats and Clarks again. A thread person told me they used to be good, but quality has steadily deteriorated over the years.

Kutnso 03-16-2011 10:45 AM

I have always used this thread both for sewing clothing, making quilts and also hand quilting. No complaints----
Good luck, Kutnso

Suzy 03-16-2011 10:47 AM

I have used coats and clark 100% cotton many times and have not had any problems, but it does give off more lint than some others. Need to clean the bobbin area more often when using it. Mettler silk finish is really nice. I use more cone threads now so use robison anton alot. My very favorite is aurifil but it is expensive. Aurifil has very little lint.

good Luck

Suzy

This has been my experience as well. It was what was mostly available for as long as I've been sewing (40+ years).

That is all I ever used until just recently. But it is still what I use most. I have never had an problems of any kind. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a machine knows what thread is going through it, but that is just my opinion.

I use C&C with no problems. I like the 100% cotton on the big spools. I have wondered how a machine knows what thread is being used also, but I have a 40/50 year old Necchi (which I use almost exclusively) and there are some threads that make it scream at me! It likes C&C so I give it what it likes!

k3n 03-16-2011 11:29 AM

When buying cotton thread, look for the words 'Long Staple Cotton' or preferably 'Extra Long Staple Cotton' on the spool or packaging - this is what determines a thread's strength and the amount of lint it produces. IMO it is a false economy to put cheap thread in a relatively much more expensive sewing machine.

g-maquilts 03-16-2011 11:36 AM

I too use Connecting Threads or Gutermann. I heard at my last guild meeting that all cotton thread is going up in price just like the fabric.
