I've used cookie cutters for applique patterns and I've traced around them for quilting patterns - use the big, uncomplicated ones like stars and hearts.

I am working on one now- I am doing the quilting by hand for each separate block - have cookie cutters all over just for this quilt- as I didn't want to use the same one twice , it may take me years to finish :) Went to the dollar store and bought the sets for the seasons, went to Walmart after Christmas and got a set of 100 for 2.50 had all the letters and so much more

They work great!! I have been using them for years as quilting stencils and applique shapes. During the seasons I love it when Walmart will have big buckets and numerous shapes for five or ten dollars. My Christmas ones for example I have twenty shapes and picked them up after season so only paid two dollars. Go for it.

I've used cookie cutters and a lot of wood cutouts from Michaels or JoAnns. I've gotten a lot of the wood cutouts for halloween and Christmas.

I am using a star cookie cutter right now in a border for a wall hanging they work great, last year did a couple of Christmas trees and stars. I use pencil to trace it and have had no problem with it washing out.

I was wondering how I would put an applique on my 16 yr old gs p;J; I will find a color book. Thanks everyone.

My mother always used pictures out of coloring books for this.

Great idea! I was ready to send my DGDs coloring books to SallyAnn. They live in Miami and haven't been up North for several years. Besides, now that they are 10 and 11, they've out-grown them :(
