You are not alone - I've done that to and it hurt like crazy. Didn't have to get stitches but it took a while to heal up.

wanda lou 05-18-2011 08:28 PM

Yes I have and I always wears shoes because Yep I have dropped it too.

OH man been there done that. I spent 25 bucks and I bought myself a pair of Klutz gloves at Joanns. Best money I ever spent. You cannot cut through them.

DITTO!!! :(

mayra 05-19-2011 03:24 AM

cut my finger with rotary cutter to the tune of seven stitches. I felt silly too. Been quilting at that point for about 10 years

Babs194068 05-19-2011 03:25 AM

Been there done that. Only mine was deep I killed the nerve in my index finger. But were not dumb just careless.

Mommomjoann 05-19-2011 03:29 AM

I dropped mine off of the cutting table, fell down on my leather sneakers and sliced my big toe! These blades are no joke when they say they are sharp!

hopingtobegood 05-19-2011 03:43 AM

My really, really stupid stunt was to put my cutter, (open of course) on my mat and carry them to a different table to move out of way, needless to say, the cutter fell off the mat and cut the back of my leg, just around the archilles tendon, cut deep enough should have gotten stitches, but didn't, bled like crazy and took forever to heal. Stupid, but ladies do not do that and I surely learned a VERY VALUABLE lesson.

hopingtobegood 05-19-2011 03:44 AM

Sounds like you and I are cut from the same mold....

familyfun 05-19-2011 03:48 AM

Man I did it a couple months ago. It healed up ok but my index finger is now alittle deformed. I cut the whole side off all the way from the top to the bottom of my nail. It was just hanging there. I should have got stitches but didnt want to wait forever in the ER.. They are sooooo slow here. Anyway. I thought I could save it with sterie strips but that didnt work and the whole chunk fell off. Needless to say I am alot more careful where I place my fingers now.

lillybeck 05-19-2011 03:53 AM

I think everyone has done that before. I have done it several times. Do not feel dumb because that is just part of the process. I have even cut myself with the scissors and I poke myself all the time with the seam ripper.

quilter68 05-19-2011 03:59 AM

seven stitches on left index finger. had to drive myself to the hospital. I take blood thinners. It wasn't going to stop.

adeliahartzog 05-19-2011 04:03 AM

I cut my finger making a quilt for my husband. I was just learning to sew. It did cut a small chunck out and I did have to go and have 4 stitches and I really felt dumb around all my quilting buddies, but I quilt like crazy now and I'm way more careful.

MYWR 05-19-2011 04:06 AM

Have done thart several rimwes - DH went into the police supply store and bought me a pair of loves to use which resist cuts from knives. - cumbersome when I am not cutting but they keep my hands unmarred when I am having a cutting day ! Y E A H D H !

maddenkids8 05-19-2011 04:07 AM

I did years ago. It was like I was peeling carrots and took off a slice of my finger. It wouldn't stop bleeding, my children were little but there was nothing to stitch so I didn't think a trip to the Emergency Room would do much good. I called my dentist to ask him if somebody had a cut gum, what would he do. He said there is a medicine to put on to stop the bleeding. I went to see him and came out with a heavily bandaged finger that stopped bleeding. Better than the ER.

caspoohbear 05-19-2011 04:07 AM

The box of bandaids stays out and visible in my craft room because of all the multi-donor DNA contributions down there!

sewingsally 05-19-2011 04:12 AM

Unfortunately, I can add my name to your list of slicers.

Wonnie 05-19-2011 04:16 AM

Been there, done that, OUCH!!!!

ThimbleShy 05-19-2011 04:33 AM

Yes. Five stiches a year and a half ago and still tender. A little
reluctant to use them now even though I have the gloves to
wear. If small project like the BOM just mark and cut with a
scissors, just as fast and accurate.

insgal62 05-19-2011 04:34 AM

I never did that . . . but I did do something much dumber. I had put my fabric in to start sewing and it bunched up under the needle. I stuck my fingers under there to pull it out and forgot to take my foot off the pedal. You guessed it!! I put the sewing machine needle straight through the top of my fingernail, clear all the way through my finger and the needle and thread came out the other side. Of course I was home alone and freaked out. I had to yank the thread out of my finger and it hurt like heck. My finger was sore for weeks. We all just need to be careful. I have been sewing 30 years and had never done that before. But I got careless and got hurt.

I was ironing a piece of fabric (barefooted) and the scissors fell off the ironing board. Thank goodness it only cut one of my toes slightly. I hardly ever wear shoes in the house and even if I do it is sandals so I try to be extra careful.

Happy Tails 05-19-2011 05:01 AM

That's probably why Fons & Porter wear a protective glove :) I'm a fainter so when I cut my finger, I did what all good fainters do - I FAINTED, lol Did I learn from it? Do I wear that protective glove - ummmmmm no lol

psquared52 05-19-2011 05:03 AM

When I first started quilting, I used a regular cutter. Found i didn't retracted the blade when I finished a cut and knew I was an accident just waiting to happen. Finally used a great coupon and bought one with the auto retractable blade. Best decision I ever made. Used that 99% of the time now and certainly feel safer.

clynns 05-19-2011 05:06 AM

Yes, and it only takes one time to let you know how not to do it again. Pain, shock, worry (am I going to lose the tip), soreness, then finally relief. Yepper, been there, done that. Pay careful attention to how you hold your rotary cutter, check your edges of your rulers for cracks or deep cuts (it might need replaced), keep your mind focus on object at hand and use a sharp blade. A sharp blade will go through the fabric the first time and you won't have to push so hard. I'm glad your ok. And your finger still has it's pinkie. :-)

I know a lady that had to have stitches on the top of her foot from the rotary cutter falling fast and hard on the top of her foot.

oh boy I am always barefoot in the house. I can just see this happening to me. I get laughed at because "at my age" once the weather warms up I go barefoot all the time I hate shoes.

quiltmom04 05-19-2011 05:16 AM

Yep - four stitches. the only thing keeping me from getting more was my thumb nail.

Happy Linda 05-19-2011 05:40 AM

I worry about that. I get so involved in my pattern:(

Roberta 05-19-2011 05:50 AM

After reading of all the incidents with the rotary cutters, I finally broke down and bought the Fons and Porter cutting glove. I don't worry as much now about the ruler slipping and the blade cutting across my hand. I am a real klutz so it's possible it could happen ;)

elm 05-19-2011 05:53 AM

Just did that at a quilting class on Tuesday. Put the rotary cutter down without closing it. Hope I don't do that again. It was a very slight cut, but got blood on the cutting mat.. I was embarassed.

Jo Mama 05-19-2011 05:58 AM

just finger nails..... :hunf:

Tudey 05-19-2011 05:58 AM

When I first started quilting 10 years ago, I didn't pay attention to where my finger was on the ruler and took the blade right into my index finger----that was a LOT of blood! Fortunately, no stitches required and I gained a healthy new respect for that sharp sharp blade!

ruck9085 05-19-2011 05:59 AM

Been there, done that! Too many tmes to count. Occupational hazzard,I reckon!

grammysharon 05-19-2011 06:00 AM

I am just like you. I cut my finger with my rotary cutter after reading time after time of other people doing this you would think I would be more careful. I was trying to cut off the tips of triangles without turning the fabric ! I feel so stupid.

God bless dentists! Mine is my go-to guy as well. He diagnosed my herniated disc, put me on prenatal vitamins, and it hasn't hurt a day since.

I can't tell you how reassuring it is to know that the pros have done and still nick themselves on occasion. I was feeling quite the noob.

#1piecemaker 05-19-2011 06:18 AM

If I ever cut mine, I'm sure I'll slice the whole thing off. You were lucky you didn't. Ouch!!!

pdunn56 05-19-2011 06:19 AM

heck yeah! I was holding it still open in my hand while I was moving fabric and nicked my other hand, nice scar too!
don't feel bad , just be more careful in future , and join the quilters who really "wear" their craft LOL

nativetexan 05-19-2011 06:21 AM

goodness, i think most of us have. those things are sharp!! i cut my thumb, into my nail. it bled for over four hours but by the time I went to the emergency room and sat for another hour it has stopped. they put tons of gause around my finger, no stitches.
i wore a metal finger guard for over a month due to the nerves hurting eveytime i touched something.
now, i had a plastic guard on my long ruler that would have saved me- but i had turned it to the other side without the guard by mistake!

CorgiNole 05-19-2011 06:31 AM

Yep - and not sure why my pointer finger was sticking out over the ruler... Have become much more aware of my fingers since then. Even though I barely bumped my finger with the blade, it bled good and hard. Scar is gone now, but the one from the iron that I burned myself on the same day is still there nearly 7 months later.

Cheers, K

Deborahlees 05-19-2011 06:37 AM

I was working hard on cutting pieces on day, using my 60mm, had the blade exposed, and ran across my entire hand, hit every finger..... was not too deep, however a little messy. once I got the bleeding stopped, used super glue to seal each cut, worked really great. Now keep a tube in the sewing room.

Scissorman 05-19-2011 06:42 AM

Go out and treat yourself to a Kai Rotary Cutter. It's the safest cutter on the market. The blade shield is pressure sensitive and automatically covers the blade after every cut. It also has three adjustments - light fabrics, lock, and heavy fabrics and it's ergonomically designed for either right or left-handed people.
