I think everyone that uses a rotary cutter has cut themselves at least once. Yes, I have cut myself more times than I want to admit. I know better and still I do something silly like this!

pollyjvan9 05-19-2011 06:43 AM

No way to have stitches on my left pointer finger. Just threw away the cut off part, went to drugstore (with grandsons assistance) bought some of the medical tape that stays on until it comes off by its self. I can't remember how long the tape was one but when it finally came off the finger was skinner, but healed. Was tender for quite a while. Am VERY careful now!

Toni-in-Texas 05-19-2011 07:02 AM

I have to be very careful about cuts because I take a blood thinner. So I do take precautions. I have guards on all my rulers. DH cut a long guard into several small pieces to use on the short rulers. If I'm going to be cutting a lot of fabric for something, I wear my Klutz glove. Right after I starting using my rotary cuter, I dropped it and it missed my foot (in flip-flops) about a half-inch, so I got in the habit of closing my cutter "every" time I lay it down. I do have one that closes automatically and that's the best one to use around others.

I took a class several years ago. The instructor was obsessed with closing the rotary blades when not in use. Someone in a previous class had cut themselves badly with a blade left open. She said you were out of the class if you left a blade open. Because of this, I very seldom cut myself.

ChildoftheUniverse 05-19-2011 07:18 AM

I routinely slice the top layer of skin off my left pointer finger... you'd think I'd learn... like the suggestions... thanks.

kateyb 05-19-2011 07:27 AM

Didn't cut my finger but dropped an open cutter on my foot. I was only wearing socks. It wasn't very long but very deep. Now I make sure I'm wearing shoes when cutting.

Lavada 05-19-2011 07:28 AM

i have the retractable cutter do not use the other ones as i am sure i would cut my finger off so far no cuts

SuzyQ 05-19-2011 07:29 AM

Oh yeah and it bled like crazy too. I actually shaved a piece of the fat part of my finger bad off. That's why I like my Accuquilt so much LOL.

I did that 2 months ago. I cut the whole tip off my finger. One suggestion is don't look up at the TV when you are cutting!Bad, Bad, Bad!!!!!

BobbiG 05-19-2011 07:44 AM

After my latest cut, I purchased a klutz glove!

quilt 43 05-19-2011 07:50 AM

cut two really bad...ER visit...try kevlar gloves...like the butchers

Ardelle Coult 05-19-2011 07:57 AM

I cut the whole side of my finger off a few years back. Needless to say I am very very careful now!

dotski 05-19-2011 08:04 AM

6 STITCHES NOW WHO FEELS SILLY ???? LOL

DonnaD 05-19-2011 08:14 AM

I was reaching across to rotary cut and sliced the back of my hand. Got a nice diagonal cut from the base of my pinkie to the base of my thumb. With the stitches it looked really Frankensteinish.

Also cut across the inside of my palm when my 4 year-old grabbed the rotary and I snatched it out of her hands by the blade. More stitches... But better me than her.

And I quit counting the nicks and scratches. Got to be too many to count. But I am getting better... Haven't cut myself in 3 or 4 days now... Hubby says I'm one of those crazy people who cut themselves for attention. I say Hubby is a pain in my...nevermind... and I should use the rotary on him.

pugmom 05-19-2011 08:25 AM

Yes, just last night actually. I keep a supply of band-aids in my sewing machine drawer.

Mema Sandy 05-19-2011 08:37 AM

I laid my cutter down without closing it,moved fabric and hit the cutter slicing side of little finger open,I now close it before laying it down.

nancy59 05-19-2011 08:43 AM

I might not be a quilter yet! I have been lucky and not caught my finger/hand/foot. Back to the sewing room for me. (Ha Ha)

wichypoo 05-19-2011 08:49 AM

It's ok hun, Been there, Done that and worn the bandage.......
more than once :-D

chali1092 05-19-2011 08:52 AM

oooooo yeah, lol hope you didn't get any on the fabric.

dawsondelights 05-19-2011 09:25 AM

Yes I just got stitches out Saturday,Done three times now & every time had to have stitches, this last one was the worst ,cut the bone& had to have Hospital take the cutter out it was stuck in the bone, ouch,oh well

Nolee 05-19-2011 09:27 AM

I cut from first knuckle down through nail bed and almost cut off 1/4th of a fingertip last fall. I put vitamin E on it, went to Urgent Care, they just butterflied it and it healed nicely but I have no feeling in that whole area anymore. Nerves just don't connect back up after something like that. I now wear "dummy glove" to cut cause I was one!!!!

When I took a class earlier this year, the instructor was similarly vigilant about closing blades and threatened to charge us $$ each time she saw one open. I find that I'm much better at automatically closing mine between cuts now.

Cheers, K

I thumb mine shut automatically between cuts. I am amazed when I see so-called 'celebrity' quilters (on You Tube for eg) waving their cutters around with the blades out - I have never cut myself on mine and am always cutting in every direction, even towards me, but I am very careful. I did however cut myself deeply yesterday with the bread knife!

grannie cheechee 05-19-2011 10:07 AM

A yr. ago I slice the side of my left pointer finger. Should have gone to the ER, but I didn't want anybody to ask what I had done. My DH helped me put steri strips on it, and believe it or not it healed great. Did I go and buy the Klutz gloves? No! Because I thought I would know enough to be more careful. Well, just last week I cut my same finger, but it was because I didn't close the cutter.
Guess who now has KLUTZ GLOVES? LOL

mrsmlm 05-19-2011 10:45 AM

What is a guard and what does it look like?

dsch 05-19-2011 10:49 AM

It's part of your initiation ritual; congratulations, you are now truly a quilter! :D

sylviasmom 05-19-2011 10:55 AM

I haven't cut a finger, although I have "trimmed" a nail or two. Scary! In the May/June issue of Quiltmaker there is a good article on how to hold your ruler so that it not only does not slide but your fingers and/or nails are safer. It is written by Debbie Caffrey, but this info is not on website. And yes it does have pictures.

gramquilter2 05-19-2011 11:02 AM

Yes, I slashed my finger so bad the bleeding wouldn't stop and ended up at the clinic. I had 5 stitches put in and I can tell you I am VERY careful when using my rotary cutter.

Doreen 05-19-2011 11:26 AM

I did it once and that was enough for me to be more careful!

Lyncat 05-19-2011 11:39 AM

A long time ago I was babysitting my best friend's daughter. She grabbed it and touched the blade with her index finger and sliced it. Later, when her mom picked her up, I told her what happened and showed her how she did it, and cut MY finger! She still laughs about it 18 years later.

LOL..I was teaching a quilting seminar..always have a little safety talk..as I was showing them the use of the guard.. on the rotary cutter..it went to fall off the table and I went to catch it and got cut..which was what I was getting ready to tell them..that was the #1 thing quilter's do..I proved my point..lol..felt stupid..so yes..we all have done it!!

laughingquilter 05-19-2011 12:32 PM

Oh yeah!!! Almost cut the tip of my little finger off! stupid thing didn't know to stay out of the way and I was cutting "illegally"!

valsma 05-19-2011 12:33 PM

From someone who got a "paper cut" from scotch tape, I feel your pain.

barbrdunn 05-19-2011 12:44 PM

Yes, my hand slipped and I cut my thumb to the bone...11 stitches and just barely missed the tendon. It taught me a sure lesson. Since then I only used the ergo rotary cutters that are automatically retractable.

LyndaK 05-19-2011 12:56 PM

Klutz glove or the fish filleting glove from the "boys' toy stores" are my thing since I cut my finger several months ago. I also never lay down my cutter without retracting the blade......ever.....and I sure don't leave the darned things lying around for anyone else to get hurt on either. It happens so quickly. As much as I like using a rotary cutter, I must admit, I never had this problem with scissors!

Linda1 05-19-2011 01:03 PM

I cut the very tip off my pointer finger on my left hand. It seemed to take forever to heal. I nick myself every so often but watch where I put my hand when I cut.
